Pets can get caught in the crossfire of bad break-ups, but they usually stay with the human who left with them. Unfortunately for Zimba, a sweet pit bull mix, when his mom, Ikea Moseley, broke up with her boyfriend in November 2017, Zimba was with the boyfriend on a trip.
The bitter ex ghosted Ikea and dumped Zimba 1300 miles away from his home in Wichita, KS. Zimba was stuck in Ridgeley, MD with no way home.
Eight-year-old Zimba wound up at the Caroline County Humane Society, where his luck began to turn. A responsible dog mom, Ikea had had him chipped and kept the information up to date. It was therefore very easy to contact her and tell her where her dog was.
But Ikea couldn't get the time off from work to make the trip. She was stuck. She wanted her dog back, but she couldn't go get him. The shelter tried to put him on a plane, but the airline wouldn't take him.
Enter Zach Holt. A former shelter volunteer, Zach was a weekend bartender with a work schedule that would allow him to drive to Kansas and back. The daddy of a dog and a cat, Zach could imagine being in Ikea's situation only too well and offered to help.
Zach started off with Zimba on December 5 and arrived in Kansas two days later. Though Zach didn't ask for any compensation, he documented their cross-country trip on social media and the shelter accepted donations for his gas and other expenses.
A very grateful Ikea sent a photo of her reunited with Zimba to the shelter. Zimba was home by Christmas.
