Patch's mom Nola Davis was home alone with him. She had just gotten out of the tub when Patch began acting strangely. He had followed her into the bathroom and she was annoyed with him. The Davises had adopted him because his previous owner couldn't keep him when he was just a puppy, but he had grown too big for their small house and yard. They were getting ready to give him away to a better home.
That day, January 12, 1999, which was Nola's wedding anniversary, Patch was acting strangely. He hated the water and hated being in the bathroom, but he had insisted on following her in. Then he suddenly grabbed her arm in his jaws and began tugging at her, trying to drag her out of the bathroom.
It wasn't until she opened the bathroom door that she realized what Patch was trying to tell her – the house was on fire!
But Patch would not let go. He kept tugging on her, showing her the way through the flames out of the house. Once outside, she realized the car was also in danger. She was about to go back inside for her keys, when Patch growled and shoved her off the porch. The house virtually exploded behind them.
The Davises lost the house and all of their belongings in the fire, which had been caused by an electrical short. But they still had each other and Patch. Eventually, they moved to a bigger home in Montana, which was also big enough for Patch.
Patch got a lot of attention for his doggy heroism and seemed very proud of himself afterward. He even got over his fear of water!
