You're prewarned — this one is a little rough to read, but worth it for the ending!
It all started when someone dropped a box off at the shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs are surrendered to shelters each year. The first thing the volunteers noticed when they took the box was the smell. It only got worse from there.
Volunteers opened the box to discover a poor pup named Little Pandora inside. Her fur was long and matted, she was filthy, and she had a mysterious growth on her shoulder. She was obviously pretty miserable and in pain, but she stayed calm and was well-behaved while they examined her.
The volunteers began grooming her just so they could assess her situation. They discovered she wasn't actually injured, but did have a few growths. They carefully trimmed away piles and piles of dreadlocks until she was all clean.
They then rushed her straight into surgery to remove the growths. You can see the one above her shoulder in the picture below, which was the worst — there were two other smaller internal ones as well.
The biopsies were sent to the lab to determine what they were, and if Pandora was going to need treatment. The growth on her shoulder was cancerous but was fully removed, and she's considered cured. Yay!
No one could resist that face for long, and she was adopted four short days after being put out for viewing. Such a happy ending for such a sweet girl.
