The story of Clifford James Herbert and his dog, Baby, has touched many hearts, and if it hadn’t been for the kindness of a stranger, Baby’s future wouldn’t have been so bright.
According to a December 23, 2016 article in the The Fresno Bee, in the month of November, Jenine-Lacette DShazer watched as a man cradled his small white dog, trying to keep her warm. DShazer grabbed a blanket, some cat food and toilet paper from her car and gave them to him as gifts. He was grateful and appreciative and as they talked she learned that he was dying of cancer (after he had lost his job and his home because of health problems in 2006). He needed to find a good home for his best friend Baby, who he had rescued three months previous, from a man who was beating her with a flashlight.
Because she had experience with GoFundMe, setting up a campaign to help spay, neuter and find new homes for Fresno’s Tower District’s stray cats, DShazer started an account for Clifford and Baby. According to a follow up article, it raised more than $24,000 for food and to pay rent at a Fresno motel.
DShazer also actively searched for a new family for Baby. People from Spain, Ireland and Columbia were interested in adopting her, but DShazer decided on The Walkers: a local, young family with two other dogs, a large fenced yard on 5 acres, and with someone always there to watch Baby.
As of January 2, 2017 (the date of the follow-up article): Clifford is staying at a hotel and working with a caseworker. DShazer is paying for the room and food from the funds raised, and if he passes away before the money has been spent, she will donate what’s left to local organizations that help homeless animals.
DShazer was touched by all the support she saw for Clifford and Baby and she hopes that all who were interested will still decide to help another animal and/or person who needs it.
